August in Houston still feels very much like summer.

The afternoons are hot. Pools are still inviting. Air conditioning is still working overtime.

But something changes this time of year.

School starts again. Vacations wind down. Calendars fill back up. Football returns. Weeknight dinners become more routine, and suddenly we’re looking toward the last few months of the year.

It may not feel like fall outside yet.

But life is definitely changing gears.

1. Get the House Back Into a Routine

Summer has a way of relaxing the rules.

Shoes accumulate by the door.

Schedules become flexible.

The pantry gets chaotic.

And somehow the kitchen island becomes the official storage location for everything nobody knows where to put.

Late August is a great time for a simple reset.

Not a major organization project.

Just enough to make everyday life easier again.

Create a place for backpacks.

Clear the kitchen counters.

Clean out the refrigerator.

Organize the pantry.

Set up a spot for mail, keys and calendars.

A little organization can make busy mornings feel considerably less busy.

2. Bring Back the Weeknight Dinner

Between practices, work, school and activities, sitting down together every evening may not be realistic.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try when you can.

Dinner doesn’t need to be impressive.

Tacos.

Grilled chicken.

Pasta.

Takeout from the neighborhood restaurant.

The important part isn’t necessarily what’s being served.

Sometimes it’s simply having 30 minutes when everyone is in the same place.

3. Football Season Changes the Weekend

In Texas, fall has its own soundtrack.

College football on Saturday.

The Texans on Sunday.

High school football on Friday night.

Friends coming over.

Something cooking on the grill.

Even people who aren’t serious football fans often enjoy everything happening around the game.

You don’t need an elaborate media room to host everyone.

A comfortable living room, good food and enough places to sit will do just fine.

4. It’s Still Patio Season—Just Later

Calling August afternoon patio weather in Houston would be optimistic.

But evenings are another story.

As the sun goes down, move outside.

Turn on the ceiling fan.

Light the grill.

Bring dinner onto the patio.

Let the kids play in the backyard.

And when the temperatures finally begin dropping later in the season, you’ll already have a space you enjoy using.

5. Give the Yard Some Attention

Houston summers are hard on landscaping.

By late August, the lawn and flower beds may look a little tired.

You don’t need a complete landscape makeover.

Clean up beds.

Trim overgrowth.

Remove struggling plants.

Freshen mulch.

Check irrigation.

Clean the patio.

Small improvements can make the entire exterior feel cared for again.

And when cooler weather eventually arrives, you’ll be glad you handled some of the work before then.

6. Take Advantage of the Neighborhood Again

When temperatures are at their highest, it’s easy to spend most of the summer moving between air-conditioned spaces.

As evenings slowly become more comfortable, neighborhood life begins picking back up.

Take an evening walk.

Ride bikes.

Visit the park.

Walk the dog.

Talk with the neighbors.

Sometimes one of the best amenities isn’t inside the house.

It’s the community outside your front door.

7. Create One Place to Slow Down

Not every part of your home needs a purpose.

Sometimes you need one place where very little happens.

A chair near a window.

A comfortable corner of the bedroom.

A porch swing.

A reading chair.

A quiet spot on the patio.

Put the phone somewhere else.

Have coffee there in the morning.

Read.

Pray.

Think.

Or simply sit for ten minutes without needing to accomplish anything.

A home should support your busy life.

It should also give you somewhere to escape from it.

8. Look Ahead Before the Holidays Arrive

It feels early.

It isn’t.

September becomes October quickly.

Then come Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas parties, travel and family gatherings.

Late summer is a good time to handle the little things you’ve been postponing.

Schedule maintenance.

Clean out the garage.

Finish that small home project.

Organize the guest room.

Take care of repairs.

You don’t have to prepare for December in August.

But you’ll probably appreciate having fewer things on your list when December gets here.

A New Season Doesn’t Need a Complete Reset

Sometimes the best changes are small.

A cleaner kitchen.

Dinner together.

An evening walk.

Football with friends.

A backyard meal.

Ten quiet minutes before everyone else wakes up.

Houston may still feel like summer outside.

But inside our homes and throughout our neighborhoods, another season is already beginning.

And that’s a pretty good reason to enjoy where you live.
